East Coast big surge!

The first I knew of the latest “surge” was when the Brightlingsea Sailing Club posted on facebook that they were looking for volunteers to fill sandbags and shore up the front of the club. It was interesting watching the reports down the East Coast; from Whitby, through Immingham and on it’s way down to the sunshine coast of Tendring.

The additional surge caused a 0.9m increase on the high tide, which was forecast to be 5.24m. High tide was not due until 14:40 but when I biked down to raise up all the contents of the beach hut where I change the tide was already enormous. So after securing the hut contents I rushed back, picked up my bag and went straight back down and swam early, at 13:40. Even then promenade walkway was under water and my crocs would have floated away had they not been moved by one of the many people who came down the prom to see this highly exciting event. These massive tides are becoming more frequent and fortunately the wind was not as strong as in February when many people lost beach huts. I’ve loaded a couple a pictures on the photo section showing the lack of promenade.

Water temp - 11.2 degrees C

Wind - 12mph

High Tide - 5.24m + 0.9m surge
